“Jarel [Gomez] is truly a rare type of student,” says one recommender. “His mix of talent, quiet determination, consistent work ethic, and joy for the art make him an ideal candidate [for this grant].” A graduate of the Learning Choice Academy with a 3.8 GPA, Jarel has played piano since he was six and began composing music in his teens. Versed also in percussion and saxophone, he plays music in many positions in his church and at nursing homes throughout the area. “Jarel not only shows natural discipline, but passion for whatever he sets his mind to,” says another recommender. He certainly does. Jarel is an elite-level trampoliner who has competed nationally since he was ten. He also volunteers for Samaritan’s purse and, last but not least, is an audio-visual tech at his church. He’s ultimately looking to learn a lot more about AV tech. Jarel will study Digital Music Production at Cal State Los Angeles. He hopes one day to become a music producer.
